Your Solution to Clutter: The Marie Kondo Method
Marie Kondo is a Japanese organizing consultant and lifestyle expert. Her mission is to “organize the world and spark joy in people’s lives.” She is the best-selling author of “The life-changing magic of tidying up”, “Spark joy”, “The life-changing manga of tidying up”, “Joy at Work”, “Kiki & Jax: The Life-Changing Magic of Friendship”, and her most recent book is “Marie Kondo’s Kurashi at Home”. Marie Kondo launched two Netflix Tidying Series, and now offers the KonMari Collection at The Container Store®. She has always been fascinated with organization and tidying her entire life and has developed the Marie Kondo method.
The Marie Kondo method is a unique way to declutter and organize your home that is very effective and can be life-changing. According to Marie Kondo, the Marie Kondo method’s secret of success is: “Start by discarding. Then organize your space, thoroughly, completely, in one go. If you adopt this approach – the Marie Kondo method – you’ll never revert to clutter again.”

Basics of The Marie Kondo Method
1. Visualize your destination.
Before you begin, identify your goals and visualize your ideal lifestyle without clutter.
- How do you want to feel in your home?
- What does your ideal lifestyle look like?
- What are your current or desired hobbies or interests?
- What do you want to get from this process?
2. Finish discarding first.
Only plan where to store things, once you finish discarding.
- Tidy by category, not location. Tidy all things in the same category in one go.
- Follow the right order. Clothes, books, papers, miscellaneous (komono), and sentimental items.
- Ask yourself if it sparks joy. This is the criterion for deciding what to keep. Does the item really “spark joy” in your heart or support your ideal lifestyle.
3. Designate a place for each thing.
Once you have gone through all categories and decided on what items bring you joy and that you will keep, you then find a final home for each item.
