If you are overwhelmed by your home because there are so many items you don’t know what to do with, you’re not sure how it got this way, and you don’t know where to start. You are not alone.
Take a look at these shocking statistics about how much stuff we own:
According to Joshua Becker:
- “There are 300,000 items in the average American home
- Average size of the American home has nearly tripled in size
- 1 out of 10 Americans rent offsite storage
- Americans spend $1.2 trillion annually on nonessential goods
- 25% of people with two-car garages don’t have room to park cars inside them, and 32% only have room for one vehicle”

If you are spending your time reorganizing, it just doesn’t work!
- Because if it did, then we wouldn’t have people buying larger homes, and needing more storage spaces all the time. The interesting thing is this. People buy larger homes to take care of stuff that they don’t want or need, and put more debt in their life, which puts more stress and chaos in their world. It just doesn’t work.
- We have more people today who are focused on buying more types of organizing containers to try and fit more things on a shelf then is possible – and they just don’t realize they own too much stuff.
- People are struggling to find storage space and continue to battle clutter, because they are just trying to reorganize, which is basically just moving the same stuff around – instead of actually making a decision, to remove some things they really don’t need or use.
This old way of living, of too much stuff, buying organizing supplies, and making never-ending attempts to reorganize everything has left more people frustrated and overwhelmed with their homes than anything else. And to top that all off, we live in a consumeristic world that persuades us to buy more stuff that we don’t need.
What I really want you to understand is a new way of organizing your home.
- Stop reorganizing! People are so focused on finding organizing containers to try to fit their stuff in the same space, they don’t take the time to think about whether they should keep the stuff or not. Stop moving stuff around and reorganizing.
- It’s so important that in this new way or organizing, it starts with decluttering and using the Marie Kondo method. Then you create functional zones in your home, so all items have a place to be stored.
- And, simplify your home and life, which means you are following a maintenance plan that works for you.
It’s really important to figure out how to control the clutter, and set up a plan that works for you, so you can get organized.
